Improving Hayward Lumber Workflow

Collaborating with other designers, I worked with corporate partner Hayward Lumber to ideate solutions to improve their workflow. We utilized ethnography and design research methodologies to empathize with consumers, design meaningful solutions and develop lasting business strategies. We studied and interviewed architects, analyzed our findings, drew insights, and generated solutions that can help alleviate frustrations architects face in the design and construction processes.

Project Overview

Problem

Architects experience frustration in the homebuilding process. Understand their needs and build solutions to improve workflow and satisfaction.

Process

Conducted ethnographic interviews with architects to understand their underlying needs. Developed Findings and crafted Insights that informed Design Principles used to create two distinct solutions to solve architects’ most pressing needs.

Solution

Solution 1: A seasonal catalog of Hayward’s best-selling products to aid architects in their product selection, to prevent replacements by subcontractors down the line.

Solution 2: A survey toolbox that helps architects compare product specifications to help them effectively substitute products in the frontend of the design process.
